Below you can read a few of the medical flight cases where Mediaviation helped. These involved either air ambulance private repatriation services, fund raising, medical escort on board of commercial flight or organising e.g. land ambulance transport.

  • John's Story
  • Corrine's Story
  • Stephen's Story
  • Michael's Story
  • Carrie Anne's Story

Case Study One: John's Story

John, a UK Customs Officer, was on holiday in Thailand when he was involved in a motor cycle accident, suffering considerable damage to his head. He was in hospital for four weeks but his insurance covered only the basic hospital treatment in Thailand. His medical repatriation by air ambulance from Thailand back to the UK was not covered. Thanks to the generosity of the Civil Service Benevolent Fund and others, Mediaviation was able to arrange for his flight back from Thailand to the UK with medical escort on board of a commercial flight. We also arranged the land ambulance transfer to a specialist hospital near his home in Kent. John is now well.

Medical Escort for Medical Flight

In this case, Mediaviation: liaised with the hospital in Thailand, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, The Civil Service Benevolent Fund, local media in London and the South East, private land ambulance in Thailand and the UK. Truly a ‘one stop' shop!

Case Study Two: Corrine's Story

Corrine was on her holiday in France where she had a ski accident.

In Corrine's case her injuries required a fully equipped air ambulance medical flight along with experienced medical flight crew to operate this medical repatriation from France back to the UK.

Case Study Two

Corrine's story was well documented in the Scottish media, even having its own fundraising website in order to raise sufficient amount of money for this air ambulance medical flight. To have a look at the way in which the money was raised to cover the cost of this private air ambulance medical flight please visit: http://www.justgiving.com/corinnesfund.

Mediaviation was pleased to work with Headway, the national brain injury charity, to ensure that sufficient funds were raised to bring Corrine home successfully by air ambulance from France back to the UK and afterwards she was in hospital undergoing rehabilitation.

Case Study Three: Stephen's Story

Steven was in Fuertaventura (Spain) assisting a friend in a wheelchair up a step when he fell, ending up with very severe injuries.

He was then in the neurology unit in Gran Canaria's hospital and needed to get back from Spain to the UK for specialist treatment and rehabilitation. This cost was not covered by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC, previously E111 form) and the family were desperate to raise the money to get him home. This was to cover the costs of specialist air ambulance flight, medical staff, land ambulance transfers in Gran Canaria, Spain and the UK, translation costs and liaising with the UK hospital.

Medical repatriation from Gran Canaria to the UK

Mediaviation helped with the fundraising with the cooperation with Headway. The family were extremely grateful to Headway for their support and to the friends who supported them. In particular:

Tesco's for allowing a bucket collection in there 2 stores Rotherham and Wath, which collectively raised over £3,000.00 to cover part of the costs for the air ambulance repatriation from Spain to the UK.

Along with:

The Albert Club 'Stars in their eyes' event, supported by Eric Brown and the Stars in their eyes cast, who were very professional.
Keith Tindle who had a sponsored chest wax (very painful)
The Queens at Rawmarsh collection box.
The Westville Collection box.
A personal donation from Vicky Brown.
Team Blacks Hawks Inline hockey club collection

All of these events raised over £1,500.00 towards the medical air ambulance repatriation costs.

Case Study Four: Michael's Story

Alone, Paralysed and Stranded!

Medical Repatriation from Philippines back to the UK by Air Ambulance

Michael was severely injured in a car crash on 31st December in Manila (Philippines). His fiancé and baby son died but his daughter aged two miraculously survived.

In the accident Michael was paralysed from the neck down and had severe head injuries; he was in the Philippines wondering if he would be able to get back to the UK to bring up his daughter.

In amongst the entire medical trauma Michael is aware of his families’ loss and that he couldn’t even go to their funerals.

He tried to renew his travel insurance online but circumstances meant that the internet connection failed, leaving his family to pay all the bills for his stay in hospital and his medical repatriation by air ambulance to the UK.

However, with love and support from friends and family and a daughter who needs him, hopefully he will regain a purpose in life.

Special thanks to Headway for working with the Family and Mediaviation, and to the BBC Inside Out programme who have helped publicise Michael's plight.

Case Study Five: Carrie Anne's Story

Mediaviation Limited, Private Air Ambulance & Medical Flight service provider, was actively involved in a high profile and very famous case of Carrie Anne Dudbridge. The newly wed Carrie Anne was stranded in Corfu (Greece) and Mediaviation performed private air ambulance medical repatriation to London.

Air Ambulance Repatriation Corfu to UK

Newly wed Carrie Anne and Michael Dudbridge in their 20's got married on 31st July and were on their honeymoon in Corfu. Carrie had a tragic accident, fell off their 20 foot balcony and fractured her spine in three places. They had an E111 form which they thought would cover them in the EU in the event of an accident, and now found out that this does not cover the cost of air ambulance repatriation. Carrie has to be lying flat with stabilisers and needs an operation in the UK. Now, she is in the hospital in Corfu and we are trying to raise money to help here get back home by air ambulance.

Together with Carrie's friends and family, we were trying to engage local media in order to increase publicity. To start with, Local Newspaper, News Shopper / Newsquest were involved and published an article on this. At a later stage more and more mass media were involved (BBC, ITV News, Sky News, Daily Mail, The Sun, Daily Telegraph and many others.

The initial article stated:
Carrie Anne Freeland and Michael Dudbridge’s Corfu honeymoon ended in tragedy after Carrie fell 30 feet from the newly married couple’s first floor room on Saturday night, fracturing her spine in three places.

They were due to fly home on Monday.

Their last minute deal was paid for by money given by guests at their wedding on July 31, however they did not take out travel insurance.

Repatriation costs could now reach as much as £16,000 as Carrie, of Swiftsden Way, Downham, needs to be flown back lying down in a plane with stabilisers.

A fundraising website has been set up with the help of air ambulance repatriation company Mediaviation.

Carrie, a secretary at Foster Park Primary School in Lewisham, is currently flat on her back awaiting treatment in hospital, where she is unable to eat and can only move her hands and feet.

Doctors are doing further tests to decide whether she needs to be flown to the Greek mainland for an operation.

Michael, of Burnt Ash Lane, Lee, has been sat by his wife’s bedside since the accident but is struggling to communicate with Greek medics because of language difficulties.

The couple of 10 years, who planned to move in together after their honeymoon, flew to Greece believing their E111 form would cover them in the event of an accident.

Speaking yesterday to News Shopper from his wife’s bedside about the night of the accident, Michael said: “We went out to have something to eat and came back to the hotel room.

“I was lying on the bed and my wife went outside to get some fresh air.

“Next thing I heard was a big thud, I looked out and she was not there.

"She was on the grass so I ran down, she tried to get up but I told her not to move.”

Michael, whose 46-year-old father died in June from pneumonia, added: “I’ve been sitting here since Saturday waiting to find out what’s going on.

“She can’t sit up, she can move her hands and feet but she has to stay completely flat.

“She can’t really talk because of the impact of the accident and she can’t eat, they have to feed her water.”

The builder added: “I’m pretty scared on my own, I feel lost, I don’t know what to do.

“I’ve not left her side. I’ve nowhere to go, all my luggage is under the hospital bed.

"We’ve nothing, all I have is €50.”

Mediaviation managed to help the family to raise the funds necessary for the medical repatriationa and performed the medical flight.
Carrie Anne had been transported by air ambulance from Greece to the UK and the medical flight took place on Saturday 22nd August. Carrie Anne was transported by land ambulance to one of London's Hospitals.

Once again, Mediaviation Ltd, private air ambulance, would like to thank all people who helped with the fundraising to bring Carrie back home by private air ambulance medical flight.
